MILOU VERHOOF was a bodily wholesome teenager from the Netherlands when she requested to be allowed to die. For years she had struggled with borderline persona dysfunction, a psychological sickness that profoundly affected her means to handle her feelings. In interviews with Dutch media, her mom revealed that she had beforehand tried suicide and had exhausted numerous choices for remedy. Final yr, on the age of 17, Miss Verhoof’s request was granted: she died in her bed room, surrounded by her household, within the presence of a health care provider. 

Assisted suicide is still a relatively new and rare practice. Thirty years ago it was illegal everywhere except Switzerland. Now at least a dozen countries permit some sufferers to self-administer deadly medication (often called physician-assisted dying) or to obtain them from a health care provider (voluntary euthanasia).
